Every other year, on even years, the town of Ainsa celebrates La Morisma. This is a medieval street theatre pageant commemorating the Christians historic victory over the Moors during Ainsa’s conquest. Legend has it that in the 8th century, at the time of the Spanish Reconquista, Garci Ximenez’s troops won the battle against the Moors thanks to the apparition of a burning cross in an oak tree.
This folkloric representation dates from 1678 and has been passed down from one generation to another through the participation of Ainsa’s (and the surrounding area’s) residents, who, every two years dress up as Christians or Moors and act out this historical event in Ainsa’s main square.
In 2014, for the first time in its history, la Morisma took place at night (30th of August) and was complimented by several other events over the weekend including theatre, a medieval market and jousting.
