The Winter Bonfires

The bonfires lit in Sobrarbe throughout January are in honour of the bearded Saints: San Victorián, San Sebastián, San Antón, San Blas and San Pablo.

In each village where they’re lit, the fires are enormous and the neighbours take the opportunity to get together around them and eat and drink whatever they have brought along to this giant spontaneous barbeque.

The bonfire celebrations are dearly loved by the people of the villages who enjoy the excuse to catch up whilst enjoying a nice moment by the fire on a cold winter’s night.

Some of the better known bonfires are:

11 January: San Victorián. Bonfire in Ainsa’s main square.
